about

"The case of fugitive Raoul Moat in 2010 had already had it's fair share of tragedy and national intrigue before Police tracked him down to the banks of the River Coquet in Rothbury. The ensuing armed siege took a bizarre twist when amidst the tension of the standoff ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne arrived in a taxi offering his support in the (mistaken) belief he knew Moat. He was turned away and was later the subject of much ridicule in the press. Regardless of what you think of Gascoigne, I believe he went there with good intentions and wanted to help simply by sitting down on the riverbank and talking with Moat one to one. This song is an "imagining" from Gascoigne's point of view." Philip Lewis-Jones in an interview on Future Radio, May 2015.

lyrics

I jumped in a taxi, came as soon as I could
Stopped for some tinnies, rods and hot food
And I brought a warm jacket in case you were cold
Cos I know you’re a good lad till the bad side takes hold.... over you

Thought we could go fishing and talk through the night
Put the madness behind us, put the world to rights
Cos I too have demons and a death wish lifestyle
And if only I could lay low like you did for a while... for a while

Ha’way, Ha’way,
Ha’way, Ha’way,

But they won’t let me see you, they turned my help down
Said I had been drinking, and should go back to town
In my head it was simple, you just needed a friend
Now the news say it’s over... and darkness descends... over me
